A variable weight measurement system used primarily in the food and beverage industry where products cannot be manufactured or packaged to exact predetermined weights. Unlike standard fixed-weight items, catch weight products are weighed at the point of sale, shipment, or inventory transaction to capture their actual weight at that moment.

This concept is critical for warehouse operations handling fresh produce, meat, seafood, cheese, and other perishable goods that naturally vary in weight due to moisture loss, trimming, or portioning processes. Effective catch weight management ensures accurate inventory tracking, proper billing based on actual weights rather than estimated weights, and compliance with regulatory requirements.

For example, a case of ribeye steaks may be labeled as approximately 30 pounds, but the actual catch weight might be 29.7 pounds due to natural variations. Modern WMS systems must accommodate these weight discrepancies to maintain inventory accuracy and generate correct shipping documentation and invoices.
