The person or company designated to receive goods that have been shipped from a warehouse or distribution center. The consignee is typically the final recipient in the supply chain, though they may also be an intermediary such as a freight forwarder or logistics provider who will handle further distribution.
In warehouse management systems, accurate consignee information is critical for proper order fulfillment, shipping documentation, and delivery tracking. The consignee data drives address validation, shipping carrier selection, delivery scheduling, and customs documentation for international shipments. Incorrect consignee information can result in delivery delays, returned packages, additional shipping costs, and poor customer experience.
For example, when processing an e-commerce order, the WMS uses consignee details to generate shipping labels, determine the most cost-effective carrier service, and provide tracking information to the end customer. The system may also flag special delivery requirements, such as residential vs. commercial addresses or signature requirements.
