The comprehensive strategy and processes that govern how returned products flow back through the supply chain, encompassing every step from initial return authorization through final disposition. This includes validating return requests, generating return merchandise authorizations (RMAs), receiving returned items, conducting quality inspections, determining restockability, and executing appropriate actions such as restocking, refurbishing, liquidating, or disposing of products.

Effective returns management is critical for maintaining customer satisfaction while minimizing operational costs and inventory write-offs. Poor returns handling can result in lost revenue, excessive processing time, and frustrated customers. Modern WMS platforms automate much of this workflow, enabling faster processing and better visibility into return patterns.

For example, when a customer returns a damaged electronics item, the system automatically generates inspection tasks, routes the product to quality control, and based on inspection results, either restocks the item as open-box inventory or routes it to a vendor for warranty replacement.
