WMS GLOSSARY

Appointment Scheduling

← Back to Glossary

A systematic process for coordinating and managing the arrival times of inbound and outbound shipments at warehouse facilities. This WMS functionality allows warehouses to control dock door utilization, labor allocation, and equipment resources by requiring carriers and vendors to reserve specific time slots for deliveries and pickups.

Effective appointment scheduling prevents dock congestion, reduces truck wait times, and eliminates the costly inefficiencies of random arrivals that can overwhelm receiving operations. By spreading deliveries across available time windows, warehouses can maintain steady workflows and optimize staff productivity throughout the day.

For example, a distribution center might allocate morning slots for perishable goods requiring immediate processing, reserve afternoon windows for standard freight, and designate evening appointments for large bulk deliveries. Advanced systems integrate with carrier portals, automatically confirming appointments and sending notifications about schedule changes, while providing real-time visibility into dock availability and upcoming arrivals.
