The process of taking related individual items and grouping them together as one SKU for an order. This warehousing strategy involves pre-assembling multiple components into a single package before order fulfillment, streamlining the picking and packing process.

Kitting significantly improves warehouse efficiency by reducing pick time, minimizing errors, and enabling faster order processing. Instead of picking each component separately during order fulfillment, warehouse staff can simply retrieve the pre-assembled kit. This approach is particularly valuable for products frequently ordered together or seasonal promotions.

For example, a computer retailer might create a “home office kit” containing a wireless mouse, keyboard, mouse pad, and USB hub. Rather than picking these four items individually for each order, workers pre-assemble the kits during slower periods and assign them a single SKU. When orders arrive, staff pick one kit instead of four separate items, reducing pick time by up to 75% while improving accuracy and customer satisfaction.
