A flat transport structure that supports goods in a stable manner while being lifted by a forklift, pallet jack, front loader, or other jacking device. Pallets serve as the fundamental unit of storage and movement in modern warehouse operations, enabling efficient handling of bulk goods and standardizing storage dimensions across facilities. They facilitate faster loading and unloading, reduce manual handling requirements, and optimize vertical storage space utilization.

Standard pallet sizes (such as the 48″ x 40″ North American standard) allow warehouses to design rack systems, calculate storage capacity, and plan transportation loads consistently. Pallets also enable accurate inventory tracking at the pallet level within WMS platforms, streamlining cycle counting and stock management. For example, a warehouse storing consumer electronics might use pallets to group cases of products, allowing forklifts to move 40-50 individual units simultaneously rather than handling each case separately, dramatically improving throughput and reducing labor costs.
