WMS GLOSSARY

WIP

← Back to Glossary

Materials, components, or products that have entered the production process but have not yet been completed into finished goods ready for sale or shipment. These items represent inventory that has moved beyond raw materials stage but requires additional processing, assembly, or quality control before completion.

WIP tracking is crucial for warehouse operations because it provides visibility into production flow, identifies bottlenecks, and helps optimize resource allocation. Accurate WIP management prevents overproduction, reduces carrying costs, and ensures realistic delivery commitments to customers. It also supports lean manufacturing principles by highlighting areas where inventory accumulates unnecessarily.

For example, in an electronics warehouse, WIP might include partially assembled circuit boards awaiting final testing, products undergoing quality inspection, or items in packaging stations. Modern WMS solutions track WIP locations, status, and cycle times, enabling managers to balance production schedules with warehouse capacity and maintain optimal inventory levels throughout the manufacturing process.
