A systematic process within warehouse management systems that identifies, flags, and manages operational deviations or errors that fall outside normal workflow parameters. Exception handling automatically detects anomalies such as inventory discrepancies, damaged goods, picking errors, or system malfunctions, then triggers predefined workflows to resolve these issues.
This capability is crucial for maintaining operational efficiency and accuracy in warehouse environments where thousands of transactions occur daily. Without proper exception handling, minor issues can cascade into major disruptions, affecting order fulfillment, inventory accuracy, and customer satisfaction. The system typically prioritizes exceptions by severity and routes them to appropriate personnel with the necessary tools and authority to resolve them.
For example, when a picker cannot locate an item at its designated bin location, the WMS flags this as an exception, temporarily removes the item from available inventory, and alerts supervisors to investigate potential causes such as misplaced stock, system errors, or theft.
